My Story and why i do this.

I trained and worked for many years as a registered nurse and midwife, and a massage therapist and registered osteopath. I worked both in the National Health Service and in my own private practice.

At the age of 50, I was offered a routine screening bone density scan, on the basis that there was osteoporosis in my family. It was not something I had ever thought about and I wasn’t concerned about it. I went for the scan.

To my surprise, I was told that I had osteopoenia , or low bone density. This condition is a precursor to osteoporosis. It was not a question of if I was going to develop osteoporosis, but when. I was told that it was an inevitable decline, and all that I could do to slow the progression was to eat 5 portions of dairy products per day, and get calcium supplements from my GP.

I had deliberately been avoiding large quantities of dairy on the basis that I had a family history of cardiovascular problems, including stroke. In those days, I was under the impression that cardiovascular problems were caused by high levels of fat in the diet.

I went to my GP. She prescribed calcium carbonate tablets and printed off some sheets of paper telling me to eat dairy and do exercise.

This is what started the thinking process. Somehow I just felt that this was all wrong.

What I discovered through my research amazed me.
Firstly, I realized that my career in healthcare had been mostly disease care. Although I knew a lot about disease, and, having worked in a big London Hospital, I thought I had seen every disease known to man, BUT, I actually knew nothing about how to be healthy and how to prevent illness, and what’s more, I don’t think that doctors know either!
Secondly, I became aware that we have been given a whole load of
misinformation about diet and health, to the benefit of Big Pharma and the food industry, but to the detriment of the health and well-being of the people.
At first there was disbelief, then anger, then acceptance, but then I knew that my future was planned out. I was going to teach people THE TRUTH about health and how to be healthy.

Six years on, I have read loads and loads of books, spent hours learning about nutrition and health, and have been following all the latest health information, mostly coming from the USA. I have had a number of health issues myself that I have had to research and treat, and I have learned a lot from my personal experience and the health problems affecting my immediate family.

For years orthodox western medicine has focused on treating the symptoms and not the CAUSE. Finally, an enlightened group of doctors in the USA realized that their patients were not getting better. They were prescribing loads of medication. Each tablet had an effect and then a whole host of side effects. They would then prescribe something else to mask the side effects of the first drug. Symptoms were stabilized with these pharmaceutical drugs, but the underlying medical condition was not being addressed. The only benefit of this approach to medical treatment is to the pharmaceutical industry. It makes billions of dollars in profit when people stay sick and dependent upon their drugs. The pharmaceutical companies are involved in the training of doctors, so doctors are trained to use pharmaceutical drugs to treat all diseases, but patients are not often ‘cured’.
This group of enlightened doctors call their new approach Functional Medicine. They use an integrated approach, using both the best of modern technology and orthodox medicine, as well as natural medicine and alternative therapies. They believe that diet and nutrition is a vital part of the treatment. They aim to treat the cause and not just the symptoms using the safest and least-invasive methods available. There are now over 100,000 doctors practicing Functional Medicine in the USA. Let’s hope that more doctors in the UK start to wake up and follow their lead.

I believe that, in order to prevent and treat disease, we have to go to the cellular level in the body. I have read a lot of good stuff from functional medicine doctors, but some of them are still recommending particular vitamins, minerals, or supplements to help with specific medical problems. This is perhaps because in the USA, doctors can make huge amounts of money from selling their own products. A doctor may truly believe that his or her products are the purest and best in the world, but there cannot be a “one size fits all” approach. If you produce a high-quality multi-vitamin supplement and it contains calcium (and that may be the best, most highly absorbable form of calcium), you are saying that everyone needs calcium in the same amounts. That is not the case. Unless you know how much calcium is in a person’s body, how do you actually know whether they need more or less of it? We are individuals and we should be treated as such.

I have come to the conclusion that the very best test in the world is the Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) test. The results of this test can be used in combination with other relevant tests to give a true picture of what is going on in the body. It is a non-invasive test that gives the practitioner an enormous amount of information. It gives different information from that obtained by blood or urine tests, but these other tests may be used to support the findings.
The HTMA is a good test for determining an individual’s health and nutritional status. Following the precise dietary and supplement advice produced by the laboratory for each individual tested, gives the person the opportunity to rebalance the minerals in the body and reverse the decline in health as a result.

Vitamins and minerals work together in the body, so while we are concentrating on mineral balance, the vitamin balance is also affected. The interactions are very complex, but the HTMA takes everything into account when recommending supplements, including the individual’s metabolic type. People often do not realize the effects of taking single vitamin or mineral supplements without first knowing their mineral levels. For example, the vitamin C molecule has many components. Most vitamin C supplements are ascorbic acid, which is only one of those components of the vitamin C molecule. Many people take large doses of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) to prevent or alleviate colds and flu. It may help them to resist viral infections, but it also has the effect of lowering the level of copper in the body, and this can make them more susceptible to bacterial infections.

I did the test for myself and also for my father, who was 85 at the time. I was so impressed with it that I have now become a practitioner for the company, and I am in the process of getting every single family member tested, as I believe that acting on the individual results can reverse and prevent imbalances that cause chronic ill-health. The younger generation can rebalance the body well before problems start to show up. I had already developed significant health problems, but I am on the road to recovery, and I feel confident that I can prevent the decline that I had begun to experience.
